The Black Preacher

“State of Nature

Words are the counters of wise men,

And the money of fools.

No arts; no letters; no society;

And the worst of all,

Continual fear and danger of violent

death;

And the life of man solitary,

Poor, nasty, brutish, and short

where life becomes survival of the

fittest”

Buhari Criticizes Nigerian Youth

As Lazy, Uneducated

27

P

resident Muhammadu Buhari on Wednesday

criticized the attitude of some Nigerian youth,

saying they were only hustling to get on the gravy

train

“More than 60 per cent of the population is below 30, a

lot of them haven’t been to school and they are claiming

that Nigeria is an oil producing country, therefore, they

should sit and do nothing, and get housing, healthcare,

education free,” Mr. Buhari was quoted as saying by The

Cable during a panel appearance with world leaders at the

Commonwealth Business Forum in London

The President’s comment adds to an earlier one he made

criticizing Nigerian youth. During a February 2016

interview with UK Telegraph, Mr. Buhari said some

Nigerians in the UK, mostly youth, are disposed to

criminality and should not be granted asylum there. He

was fiercely criticized for the comment, with many saying

it failed to convey the reality of Nigerian youth’s exploits

Early this year, an analysis by Rice University in the U.S.

showed that Nigerian youth are the most educated of all

migrants in the country. The institution credited the

finding to a culture of relentless drive for education

amongst Nigerians

Only on Tuesday, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo was in

Lagos to meet young innovators at Andela and the larger

tech community in Yaba. The hub is driven by young

innovators and entrepreneurs and is widely seen as a

manifestation of their entrepreneur zeal

Mr. Osinbajo had also witnessed Nigerian youth’ quest

for gainful employment in the way they embraced the

administration’s N-power programme which paid as low

as N30,00028 a month for teaching jobs

Presidential spokespersons Femi Adesina and Garba

Shehu did not respond to Premium Times’ requests for

their comments about whether the president was aware

of Mr. Osinbajo’s efforts and the statistics by foreign

institutions on young Nigerians

Several commentators online slammed the president for

his latest remarks while others defended him

“Buhari has lived off Nigeria his entire life. His son was

treated for an accident thousands of Nigerians die from

yearly at Nigeria’s expense. Yet, he sits and insults

millions of Nigerians who have had the misfortune of

not being born into the “right” families. It is sad,” said

BiLola Kazeem, a sports marketer and political

commentator, in a Twitter update Wednesday

“Serious question – has Buhari, in his adult life, ever been

able to live without government income?” another

Twitter user, Feyi Fawehinmi, said Wednesday night,

adding that there is little evidence to show that the

president earns money from his livestock farm in his

hometown of Daura

Some of the president’s supporters, however, pushed

back against the criticism, with many saying the

president’s observations reflected his well-known

personality as a blunt leader

The supporters said the president only reechoed

Nigeria’s abysmal education and employment situation,

which had long been in public domain

In the affirmative, I think he’s giving a graphic picture of

what’s going on and asking the right audience to come

in,” said Ayo Akanji, one of the vocal supporters of the

president online

What I Meant Describing

Nigerian Youth As Lazy – Buhari

29

P

resident Muhammadu Buhari has offered further

explanation for his take-down of Nigerian youth

while speaking at a forum in London last month

The president described Nigerian youth as lazy elements

of the society who sit back, do nothing and expect the

riches of oil wealth to touch them

“More than 60 per cent of the population is below 30, a

lot of them haven’t been to school and they are claiming

that Nigeria is an oil producing country, therefore, they

should sit and do nothing, and get housing, healthcare,

education free,” Mr. Buhari was quoted as saying by The

Cable during an April 19 panel appearance with world

leaders at the Commonwealth Business Forum in

London.

The comment sparked nationwide anger and a flurry of

protests sprang up on social media under several

campaign tags, including ‘LazyNigerianYouth’

The presidency later explained that Mr. Buhari meant ‘a

lot of’ and not all Nigerian youth

29

https://www.premiumtimesng.comT H E Y A R E K I L L I N G M E !

In a recent interview with the Voice of America, which is

part of his trip to the United States, the president gave

what he believed was a clarification of his earlier

comments

He was asked by the interviewer to explain what he meant

by his previous statement on Nigerian youth

In response, Mr. Buhari said, “You know they say we are

over 180 to 200 million people in Nigeria and 60 per cent

are youth below the age of 30

“In the North, for instance, most have not attended

school or they abandoned halfway. If not because we had

favourable rainfall in the past two seasons; most of them

have no job, just idling away

“People like them, even if they go to the South, for

instance, what they will make will not be enough to even

pay their rent not to talk of feeding, clothing and

transport back home,” the president said

He added that the media might have caused the uproar

generated by his initial comments and went on to say

what his government had been grappling with

“That has not been explained enough and you know the

media, especially the print, are simply doing whatever

they like. We had two successful farming seasons, people

went to farm and did very well, but no one is talking

about that; only insults

73A N T H O N Y A B A N O B I A B I O D U N A J E R O

“That is why the Minister of Information, Lai

Mohammed, had to respond to the letter of insults by

Mr. Obasanjo. We spoke about it and I asked him not to

respond but he refused and said he will just respond by

stating the situation we met the country, where it is now

and what was done in between and the monies we are

getting,” Mr. Buhari said

The president repeated one of his controversial talking

points that oil sold at an average $100 a barrel for the 16-

year rule of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

Premium Times examined the claim here last October and

found that it was inaccurate. The president’s claim that

he met “nothing” in the federal treasury when he

assumed office was also debunked in that article

“Recently, I had to come out and state that from 1999 to

2014, anyone who carries out a study here in America or

Europe or India will know that we were producing 2.2

million barrels of crude oil daily at a price of at least $100

per barrel

“In those 16 years of PDP rule, Nigeria was getting 2.1

million x 100 dollars every day, every week, but when we

came on board, the price fell to between $37 – 38 and

hung around $40 – 50. I went to the Central Bank of

Nigeria (CBN), - the governor of CBN is here – and asked

him, how far? And he said nothing was left apart from

debts. I said, but this is what the country made? And he

74T H E Y A R E K I L L I N G M E !

75

said: Yes. He knew, and I asked him, where is the money?

All gone.

“Nigerians know that there were no roads or rail lines,

there was no power, despite the billions of dollars spent.

Only God will judge this thing.” Mr. Buhari said

went agog with the news. But today, only a few months

after, all that noise is washed ashore, and it is evident that

Buhari was right

How can over 100 million people under 40 be looking to

a 72-year-old to rescue us from an 82-year-old? Isn’t that

just non-compos mentis? They chant Atikulated!

Atikulated! Isn’t that how they all chanted Sai Buhari!

Sai Buhari! almost four years ago? Look where all that

chants and foolishness has brought all of us, yet

Nigerians still haven’t learnt from their mistakes or read

the handwriting on the wall

Twenty years is enough proof that neither old age nor

political experience is the answer to Nigeria’s

monumental challenges as is evident in the emergence of

Nigeria as the poverty-capital of the world amidst being

one of the world’s most corrupt nations, with a debt

profile of N22.4trillion while her senators and top office

holders smile to the bank with incredulous paychecks

and allowances to the slavery of the common Nigerian!

I write to say, and support Mr. President, that indeed

Nigerian youth are not just the laziest of all youth in the

world, but they are the most miserable of human beings

alive. How can we come through such a history of

colossal mismanagement of Nigerian funds and gross

disrespect of the Nigerian people by our leaders and still

have the audacity to open our mouths or carry our legs to

support these old-recycled corrupt-stomach

infrastructure politicians?

How can 100 million Nigerian youth amongst whom we

have vibrant, competent, and able young men who can,

without any doubt, steer this nation back on course to

the greatness that she once was known for, be at the verge

of sharing their precious votes and voices among two old

retired comrades who should have nothing to do on the

corridors of power but be in their homes receiving elderly

care? “Tufiakwa” 33 Nigerian youth!

Shame on every Nigerian youth who is using their energy,

time, talent and expertise to support Atiku or Buhari.

Shame on every Nigerian youth who is foolish enough to

think that the time has come to partake of their own

portion of the national cake. Shame on every Nigerian

youth who for a paltry sum is ready to sell off his future

and that of his unborn children to people who have

absolutely no interest in the progress of this nation

Shame on you all. You are the problem of this country –

all of you who have, with your eyes wide open – decided

to foolishly continue to enjoy slavery in the hands of the

wicked-inconsiderate-selfish and greedy masters of yours

who parade themselves as politicians

This nation and her generations unborn will not forgive

you for selling off their future and for bringing untold

hardship and handing down a nation of poverty, chaos,

and war to them

I pray, like our national anthem captures perfectly, that

God will help the youth of this nation the truth to know,

direct the noble cause of this great country, and especially

guide our leaders right so that the labours of our heroes

past will not be in vain, to the end that once again we

might have a nation that is bound in peace, unity,

progress, and prosperity. So help us God!
